Man oh man, SEC media days are upon us and how things have changed in a year. This time last year VOLS fans were delusional as ever after coming off a SEC East title. The story lines of last Summer are laughable looking back; Goon Squad, G-Gun, Dave Clawson.
But as boring as the VOLS had been the last decade, Phillip Fulmer was the talk of SEC Media Days after a Birmingham attorney issued him a subpoena as he walked into the Wynfrey Hotel.
We didn't know at the time that that would be Coach Phillip Fulmer's last SEC Media Day as the Volunteers coach. And despite what happened since, I can't help but remember how angry that publicity stunt made me this time last year. Despite our mediocrity, Fulmer was my coach, was the most senior coach in the toughest league in the nation, and didn't deserve to be humiliated. He was criticized for initially denying that he had been subpoenaed, but anyone not living in Alabama knew he handled that with more class than most people would.
Well, maybe he deserved a little bit, considering he helped get Alabama's Football program on probation for the majority of the new century and had owned them the last half of his career. But regardless, it was just another example of why Media Days should not be held anywhere near the Alabama fan base.
But in case that brave fella or anyone else needs reminded, there's a new gang on Rocky Top and they are already the talk of SEC Media Days. For some reason, I don't see anyone brave enough to humiliate Ed Orgeron on the streets without getting the crap knocked out of them. And if you think Lane Kiffin is going to let someone embarrass him in the limelight; you better read the news. And if you mess with Monte, well you are messing with the entire VOL Nation and Eric Berry is going to lay you out in downtown Birmingham.
Which brings me to my next point, Lane Kiffin is bringing the truth with him this year in junior All-American Eric Berry. It's not everyday that a rookie coach and a team that went 5-7 record swagger jack the defending BCS Champions and a Heisman Trophy winning QB.
Here's my prediction:
-Lane Kiffin's comments make National Headlines and makes Mike Hamilton sweat through his suit.
-Urban Meyer gets really pissed when asked about his UFelons and the Notre Dame head coaching job.
-Nick Saban says the word "aight" at least a dozen times during his speech.
-Les Miles will be entertaining while looking lost and confused.
-Steve Spurrier will for the first time ever put journalists asleep, because no one cares about him or his South Carolina football team.
-Mark Richt will be nice and admirable, while striking fear in no one.
-Dan Mullen will be asked for 5 forms of identification at the door, because no one knows who he is.
-Houston Nutt will downplay all of Ole Miss's preseason hype, because he knows they aren't as good as everyone is saying.
-Gene Chizik will savor the moment, because he knows there won't be many more.
Who's ready for SEC Media Days? I know I am.
