Crompton named starter, other notes

Senior QB Jonathan Crompton beat out Nick Stephens to get the nod as UT's starting QB for the WKU game on September 5th. The battle was as close as any position on the field said coach Lane Kiffin following UT's final Fall scrimmage on Saturday.

Senior offensive center Josh McNeil's career at UT is currently in question while he undergoes an MRI on a knee that has troubled him most of camp. The former Parade All-American used a redshirt his first year on campus and would have the chance to become the VOLS' all-time leading starter in 2009.

Therefore, look for former walk-on Cody Sullins to get the nod as the VOLS' starting center. Sullins had great Spring and Fall camps and many thought he might win the starting position regardless.

With leading WR Gerald Jones sidelined 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprang, safety Rod Wilks was moved to the offensive side of the ball on Monday. The transition should be fairly easy for the Smyra native, who was named the 2008 Mr. Football after reeling in 20 TDs and 1,170 yards. Wilks appears physically capable of becoming a legit wide receiver, after bulking up to 6'1-220 lbs while redshirting his freshman year.
