Anytime Tennessee is recruiting a top player in Oklahoma, you got to like their chances. The VOLS reeled in the state's top player in 2003 and 2009 when they signed Robert Meachem and David Oku. In 2007 the VOLS nabbed the state's #3 prospect in Gerald Jones.
Will the trend continue in 2010? That's for athelete Demarco Cobbs to decide.
Cobbs is a dual-threat QB in a spread offense at Tulsa Central, but will likely be a WR at the next level. After watching his video (below), it is clear that his quick and shifty feet make him a threat in the open field. At 6'2-200 lbs he is tough to bring down even if you do catch up.
In 2008 Cobbs rushed for 1,307 yards and 23 touchdowns and threw for 1,108 yards and six more scores. He also accounted for two touchdowns on 236 receiving yards, intercepted two passes, and returned two punts and one kickoff for touchdowns.
With stats like that it is no wonder Cobbs has scholarships from every top program in the nation, 33 in all. Southern Cal, Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee just to name a few.
This week coaches from UT were in Tulsa checking out Cobbs and are very much in contention for his signature.
When asked about UT Cobbs had this to say.
"Yeah, Tennessee is one of those schools that im liking right now. I plan on going to their camp or just visit sometime in the summer."
Cobbs says he grew up a Texas fan watching Vince Young but that it won't really matter when it comes to his recruitment. At the beginning of April Cobbs said he didn't have a leader but if he did USC would probably have an edge. However none of the teams should count out the home state Sooners and Cowboys.
"I like the way they use Dez Bryant,” he said of OSU. "If I was to make the decision to go there, I think I could be the person to replace Dez Bryant. Plus, they’re close to home.”
Given UT's success in Oklahoma, lack of offensive playmakers signed in 2010, and our Allstar Recruiters, it's likely UT will be in it until the end for Cobbs. He expects to cut his list in September before the start of his senior season.
